Will you be ready if the day ever comes when you encounter a child who is not breathing? Many accidents and illnesses are the cause of death for many of our young. What can you do to increase the chances of potentially saving a child’s life? There is a way that we can be prepared for that emergency if it should ever occur. Below are some useful tips in which both the public and medical community can do in effort to increase the probability of saving a child’s life.
The American Heart Association is the authority on saving lives of adults and pediatrics. They offer First Aid as well as CPR for the layperson to increase the chance of survival for all humanity. Fire Departments in your local community teach these classes to help prepare you for an emergency. These classes also help to raise awareness for the need of additional safety.
CPR can help save the lives of children by restoring the Airway, Breathing and Circulation until help arrives. The basics of providing an open airway is enough to save a life by allowing O2 to enter and CO2 exit the lungs. If a child is not breathing or not breathing adequately, we can provide ventilation until help arrives. With no pulse present, we are able to begin chest compressions to increase blood flow to the brain and vital organs. Hence knowing CPR and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is essential.
Our community can also help to increase the chance of survival of our youth by providing Automated External Defibrillators at specified locations. Swimming pools, Fire Stations, Police Vehicles or on Mail vehicles. The AED helps to restore normal cardiac rhythm by delivering electrical energy to the heart. A patient has a greater chance of survival if they receive electrical therapy in less than 6 minutes from the time of the cardiac arrest.
Finally, our medical community needs to take an opportunity to obtain the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification by the American Heart Association. This course has help to save the lives of thousands of pediatrics throughout the world. The course helps to shed light on the more advanced procedures and techniques for resuscitation. The entire community can be prepared for a child when an emergency occurs. Be a part of a winning cause and lets save the children.
